Footage shows Charlie leaning over James to film the grass snake sliding around the front hood and onto the right side mirror.

As it sneakily moves to the side of the car, one of Charlie’s family is heard to say anxiously, “Damn it.”

The snake then glides to the top of the side mirror while constantly sticking out its tongue.

After realizing it can’t go any further, the snake tries to curl up to return to the hood.

A passenger is heard saying, “Jesus Christ, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a snake.”

The unfortunate reptile then falls out of the car and crashes onto the concrete highway while the men in the van yell, “Oh no.”

Videographer Charlie posted the video on TikTok yesterday, writing: “I was driving down the M5 when this happened.

“We tried to stop, but there was no hard shoulder.”

The video has been viewed over 25,000 times and garnered dozens of comments from shocked viewers.

Today Charlie said: “My father, the driver, spotted it first and yelled ‘Oh my god, there’s a frigging snake.’

“Me and my cousin Max were like ‘what?’

“We didn’t see it for a good 10 seconds initially.

“My dad pulled into the slow lane and slowed, which caused the rear car to beep at us.

“Then I got out my camera and started filming.

“We were probably going at 70mph when it popped its head out.

“We were in the middle lane, but quickly switched to the slow lane.

“We really wanted to stop and save it, but unfortunately it was a smart highway so we couldn’t stop.

“We were parked in a field and it must have crawled into the engine bay because it liked the heat.”

Grass snakes are mainly found in lowland areas of Great Britain.

They are particularly settled in some areas of southern and south-eastern England.

The harmless snakes are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, making it illegal to knowingly harm or kill them.
