A shooting outside a school in suburban Minneapolis left one student dead and another in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities, who said hours later, according to authorities. Two suspects were arrested.
Police said gunfire erupted around midday near the entrance of the Boys’ Education Center in Richfield, Minn. in a press conference.
It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting or whether students were targeted. The victims, whose names have not been released Tuesday night, were found on the sidewalk. police said.
Shortly after 6 p.m., police executed search warrants at two locations in Minneapolis related to the shootings, police said. Police said officers arrested two suspects and recovered a handgun, and were not looking for more suspects. Authorities did not release the names of the suspects.
Jay Henthorne, police chief in Richfield, said at a news conference as a precaution, several other schools in the area that had been locked down were later lifted.
Sandy Lewandowski, the superintendent of local schools, said at a news conference that it is difficult to understand what caused the violence.
She said: “It is always confusing when an incident like this happens and it is especially important that anyone who needs help can find that support.
An FBI spokesman said the agency is assisting local police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. also answered to take a photo.
Richfield is a welcoming, safe and welcoming community, Mayor Maria Regan Gonzalez and City Council said in a statement.
“These headlines come up all too often, and it is with our hearts that such a tragedy has occurred in our community,” the statement said.
At Richfield High School, another school less than half a mile from the shooting site, several law enforcement officers “accidentally” appropriated that property in their initial response, Erica Barlow , the school’s principal, wrote in a notice to parents on school website.
Ms Barlow wrote: “The officers drew their weapons and wore bulletproof vests. “Not many students witnessed the event, as they were in class at the time. However, it is important that you be aware of the incident in case your child hears about it, as some children can be profoundly affected by this type of news.”
Based on local news report, the Southern Education Center had another lockdown in September, when a student was arrested after being found with a loaded pistol. Students do not threaten anyone or use guns.
