Shop local vouchers keep €2 million in the Dundalk economy

Dundalk Chamber of Commerce shop Local gift vouchers brought in €2 million to the city’s economy in 2022.

na McGoey, President of Dundalk Chamber, announced that Shop Local gift card sales have reached a staggering record of €2 million in Shop Local gift card sales in 2022.

That brings a total turnover of over 7 million euros since the market launch, an unbelievable sum in such a short time.

This hugely successful initiative was launched just over seven years ago to support local retailers and businesses.

Una thanked the business community of Dundalk for getting behind this program and buying the vouchers for their staff at Christmas.

“These sales would not have happened if it weren’t for the goodwill of the business community that sees value in keeping money in the area,” Una said. “Our priority was to stop the flow of money out of the city.”

She also thanked the members of the public who bought the vouchers and kept them on site for Christmas.

“This initiative was created to save money and protect local jobs in the local economy. The chamber plans to increase sales even further in 2023!”

Dundalk Chamber’s Paddy Malone PRO stated that the vouchers offer the recipient “the gift of choice” as they can be spent at toy stores, supermarkets, restaurants, hair salons, gift shops, gyms, beauticians, clothing stores and more.

He added that the vouchers can be redeemed at a wide range of stores, including 350 stores in the Dundalk area.

“The vouchers are now available in values of €5, €10, €20 and €50. They make ideal gifts for birthdays, weddings, communions, confirmations, sweepstakes, farewells, and employee rewards all year round.

“The beauty of these coupons is that they don’t expire and stores get the full amount back. They don’t depreciate in value over time.”

Vouchers can be purchased at Grants, St, Michael Smyth’s. Francis St, Central News, Clanbrassil St, Centra Blackrock, Sheelans’, Riverstown, Finnegans, Louth Village, Flanagan’s Mace on Dublin Road. and Pats Gift Shop & Victory Centra in Dunleer, Valentines Centra in Carlingford and Lush, Barrys Shop Grange, Dundalk Credit Union Market St and The Ramparts.

“Two recent tax changes are worth noting,” Paddy said. “First, an employer can give a maximum of 1,000 euros in one year, and second, this can be split into two payments. So an employer could give 500 euros now and 500 euros in the summer holidays or on another special occasion to say thank you.”

The vouchers can also be purchased online at www.shoplocal.dundalk.ie – there is no postage – and direct from the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce office by contacting Brenda on tel: 042 9336343 or email accounts@dundalk.ie call
