Mexico: Terrible moment The ceiling of a department store collapses

Shoppers fled in horror when a freak hailstorm smashed the roof of a department store until it collapsed.

Shocking phone footage of the incident resembles a disaster movie, showing people screaming and running for their lives as a ton of debris crashes down on them.

The collapse occurred on Sunday, June 12, at the Soriana department store in the Benito Juarez neighborhood of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.

Officials said the ceiling gave way after a relentless storm of huge hailstones battered the store’s roof for 30 minutes.

In a chilling phone video, water can be seen pouring through the ceiling over the store’s engineering department.

When the hailstones weigh too much, the entire ceiling gives way, scattering terrified shoppers.

A second video shows the devastation surrounding the store’s grocery section, showing the entire roof collapsing into a tangle of twisted metal.

Amazingly, only one person was injured during the disaster, while more than 200 shoppers and employees were evacuated.

Santiago Taboada Cortina, 36, Mayor of Benito Juarez, reported that one person needed medical attention after having an anxiety attack.

He added: “There was a hailstorm that lasted almost 30 minutes, very violent, and the roof of the store collapsed.

“We arrived at the Soriana site in Mixcoac and unfortunately a quarter of the camp structure had collapsed due to the large amount of hailstones that fell within minutes of the storm.

“We arrived and were practically the first to react. The mayor’s office came in the first minute.”

The mayor said an investigation into the collapse is underway.
