Scone purists were furious after spotting an ad for the delicious treat at a local Waitrose but it was made the ‘wrong’ way.

The offending ad was spotted at the Truro branch in the heart of Cornwall, a region that takes its scones pretty seriously.

In the picture, the scone was made with the cream first, a mortal sin for the Cornish, where traditionally jam is used first.

However, Waitrose was quick to embrace the criticism and pledged to donate cream teas from the shop to local food banks as an apology over the anniversary weekend.

It was shopper Barry West, from St Austell, who noted the store was in a bind when he posted a photo of the £3.75 cream tea – featuring a clotted cream and jam scone with a hot drink – Posted to a couple of Facebook groups.

A number of dissatisfied shoppers shared the error online

He wrote: “Waitrose Truro in Cornwall totally screwed it up. Not just tangy cream, but also the wrong way round. The text says curdled, but the poster is what people will see and remember.

“Surely they could and should support local clotted cream producers and respect the Cornish way? It makes you wonder how such a big company can do something so simple so wrong?”

Waitrose quickly cleared up part of Mr West’s complaint. A spokesman for the company said: “For us, just the original is enough – we can confirm that the pictures were taken with Clotted Cream.”

Social media was awash with horrified comments.

‘Everybody knows it’s JAM FIRST’, ‘Ugh’, ‘Totally shocking’, ‘Boycott this abomination’ were just a few other comments from Cornish buyers.

“Disgraceful…drive them out of town…obviously a campaign being run by the inland bigwigs…should have stopped at the Tamar Bridge and searched and banned this filth from being displayed down here !” said another.

Another die-hard Scone fan added: “It’s not like they don’t host the Cornish shop on the premises! However, to their credit, they didn’t say it was Cornish Cream Tea. I think the same poster must be displayed in their UK stores. It’s just that Cornwall does these things better!”

A Truro store employee said it was indeed a national poster and it was unlikely that a ‘Jam First’ poster would be produced just for the two Cornish stores – in Truro and Saltash.

To make up for the error, the store has pledged to donate to some local food banks ahead of the anniversary weekend.

The Waitrose spokesman added: “We’ve got s’cone and we’ve gotten a bit stuck with that. To make amends for our customers in Cornwall we are donating cream teas to our local food banks over the anniversary weekend so even more locals can enjoy this special treat – jam first of course!”
