Peter Dinklage described Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as a “backward” story due to its representation by dwarves.
Speaking on Monday’s episode of WTFa podcast hosted by American comedian Marc Maron, Game of Thrones the actor pointed to Disney’s 1937 animated reboot as an example of the “hypocrisy” he has witnessed in the film industry.
The princess will do West story Rachel Zegler stars in Marc Webb’s film, which is currently in production. “I was a bit surprised that they were so proud to cast a Latina actress to play Snow White,” Dinklage told Maron. He described the casting as “progressive”, but said that ultimately the filmmakers “were still working on the out-of-date story of seven cave-dwelling dwarves”.
Zegler’s casting “marks a step in the right direction for Disney to diversify its Disney Princess characters”, Limit line talk about last year’s news. But Dinklage sees the remake itself as “a step backwards towards media representation of dwarfism,” says USA Today.
“That makes no sense to me,” says Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia. “I did nothing to verify the cause of my soap box? I guess I’m not loud enough.”
The 52-year-old actor wished “all love and respect” to Zegler, “and everyone who thinks they’re doing the right thing”. But add: “I was just like, what are you doing?”
Disney responded with a statement: “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have consulted with the member of the dwarven community.
“We look forward to sharing more as the film begins production after a long period of development.”
Webb’s remake of the animated classic “will have cultural consultants” involved, and “the studio has been re-imagining dwarves since the very beginning,” said The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on The Wrap, “Instead of dwarfs, Disney will fill the void with a group of what they describe as ‘mystical creatures'”. The live-action remake also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.
“It’s not clear if they’ll perform the same roles as the dwarves – will they mine for gems? Do they have names like Sleepy, Grumpy, and Bashful? , the entertainment news site continued.
Dinklage says he’s all for a new version of Snow White that puts “its most whirlwind, most fascinating, most progressive”. But he said studios don’t take “risks” with production, and instead rely on remakes.
The filmmakers know they have a “cash cow with that story”, say WTFMaron’s, who said choosing to produce a remake would be “unquestionable” for the studio.
