Should teachers really be that involved in the emerging sexuality and sex lives of our children?

I went to school when sex education was basically biology. We didn’t go into things, as one enthusiastically agrees. We did not have to. Aided by our parents, an older cousin, and possibly Dawson’s Creek, we largely navigated this nuanced, highly subjective, and impossible-to-teach side of life ourselves.

We are currently in the consultation phase on the draft Social, Personality and Health Education (SPHE) Curriculum for the Junior Cycle in Post-Primary Schools. The proposed changes would result in teaching hours increasing to 100 hours, roughly one hour per week, and the changes include “new material on a range of topics including consent, safer use of the internet, pornography, gender identity and sexuality.” Orientation”.
