Side Hustle Stories: Amelia Trumble, co-founder of Retold Recycling

As part of TechRound’s Side Hustle Month, we spoke to entrepreneurs who have experienced hustle first hand. Here we chat with Amelia Trumble, co-founder of Retold Recycling, as she shares her inspiration for starting a part-time job, what came of it, and advice for others looking to make money outside of their 9-5.

How did your side job start? What inspired you to start it?

“The three of us who co-founded Retold Recycling have worked together in marketing at MAC Cosmetics in New York and have often spoken about a long-term linchpin to investing our efforts in a company that does good for the earth. Years later I was renovating my closets in a small NYC apartment and was frustrated at not finding a solution to easily decluttering unwanted clothes, especially without sending them to the landfill. My business partner Noelle and I crystallized the idea over dinner one night and then Alan invited himself to join us in the business! (Lucky for us as he’s the math guy/customer data guru).”

How did you cope with your part-time job alongside other professional commitments?

“Because our mission – #NoLandfill – is so central to what we do, you can’t help but be motivated to get the job done every day. In the first year of operation, I packed all our orders personally, but did not neglect weekend and night work because I was so close to our customers and had everything operational under control.”

“None of us 3 founders have received any salary from the company to date and we all still work elsewhere mostly full time – I work around 30hrs a week / 20hrs a week at Retold. We couldn’t do it without our amazing team and our recycling partner who takes care of everything behind the scenes.”

“For me personally, I had to consolidate the consulting work I do for my ‘day job’ to just one client because it was far too complex to juggle AND retell the needs of multiple clients. You can read any productivity book and listen to any business podcast for tips, but sometimes you actually need to make a change to be successful – and my clients also understand that Retold will always be my number one priority.”

What has happened to your part-time job since you started?

“We are a fast growing profitable company! Our consumer business at has grown double or triple digits m/m and we just completed a small Friends & Family round to accelerate with even more marketing/PR.”

“We’ve just launched our first brand partnership advancing a recycling bag program for Vitamin A Swim, and we have several more on the way this year!”

“Hopefully we will become synonymous with clothing and textile recycling in the next few years and take our vision to other countries too!”

What advice would you give to others who are looking to start their side hustle?

“Just start. You can be paralyzed trying to get all the details together, but just lean into the areas where you feel most comfortable and then ask people for help in the areas where you lack expertise. “

“Also, I highly recommend bootstrapping or negotiating with contractors for welding capital wherever possible – it gives you so much more freedom to proceed at your own pace without investors or debt hanging over your head!” Side Hustle Stories: Amelia Trumble, co-founder of Retold Recycling
