BGT: Simon jokes with Scooter Boys about borrowing helmets

Simon Cowell joked he “may have to borrow” a helmet from Britain’s Got Talent Scooter Boys semi-finalists four months after his e-bike crash.

The 62-year-old was taken to hospital in February after he was pushed over the handlebars of an e-bike going 20 km/h.

The music mogul was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash near his home in west London.

A source told The Mirror Simon was “lucky to be alive” after the collision left him bleeding and broke his arm.

His latest accident comes just 18 months after he broke his back on an electric bike in Los Angeles.

Simon mocked his unhappiness on Friday night’s Britain’s Got Talent as four youngsters performed daring scooter rides.

Scooter Boys – a quartet of kid scooters aged 6 to 10 – stepped onto the stage to impress the judges.

But when one of them reached the ramp, it all went horribly wrong when young Austin slipped and fell.

There was silence at the London Palladium as someone rushed to pick him up and take him off the stage.

For a minute, it was touched and gone – until the production staff nodded at Simon he was fine.

Despite receiving four yeses from the judges, Simon said he “never let my son Eric see this audition”.

He continued: “The weird thing is I was going out with my son Eric today and he was on one of these and he was like, ‘Dad, do I have to wear a helmet? ‘”

Simon said he replied, “Yes. Yes, you have. And that’s why.”

One of the Scooter Boys then said, “They even have our names on them.”

“Well, I might have to borrow one of those,” Simon quipped back at what appeared to be a reference to his own bicycle accident.

Unfortunately, the Scooter Boys were sent home, as comedian Axel Blake and child conservationist Aneeshwar Kunchala were sent to Sunday night’s final.

After his most recent crash, Simon called himself “a jerk” – and vowed to wear a helmet next time.

Speaking for the first time after his terrible accident, Simon said Online email : “I’m fine. I feel so much better, thank you. It happened just round.

“’I’m a madman. I will definitely wear a helmet next time.”

Despite falling for the second time in less than two years, Simon is said to still refuse to give up his beloved bike – much to his fiancee, 43-year-old Lauren Silverman’s heartache.

The couple are getting married in London later this month – even though Simon has vowed never to get married. They share an 8-year-old son, Eric.

• Britain’s Got Talent final airs on ITV at 7:30pm on Sunday
