Simon Thomas lost his wife Gemma in 2017. She died of acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 40
Simon Thomas spoke about the guilt his wife Derrina sometimes feels after the death of his first wife Gemma.
The presenter married his first wife Gemma in 2005 and has one son, Ethan. She died of acute myeloid leukemia in 2017 at the age of 40.
He has since married Derrina and said the family does their best to celebrate Gemma-related anniversaries.
“I think sometimes you struggle with guilt a bit, especially around anniversaries,” he told Derrina.
“I’m very comfortable with anniversaries because I don’t overthink them. I think the first year you take losses those firsts are huge and each first is a hurdle to overcome and it gets easier over time.”
He added Kate Ferdinand Mixed Podcast: “I’m not one that, every anniversary, it’s just for me, a timestamp, but from Ethan’s point of view, it’s an ‘do you want to do something?’
“I think sometimes Derrina thinks, ‘But we should do something.’ Before an anniversary, I get asked a couple of times, ‘What are you up to? Do you want to do something with Ethan? Does Ethan want to do something?'”
He went on to say that sometimes his son doesn’t feel like doing anything but wants to “deflate a balloon with a little message.”
“I think sometimes you feel like we should be doing more because you feel like maybe we’re not doing enough and I’m trying to put Derrina at ease and say it’s okay,” he added.
Derrina agreed, saying that she feels the guilt and “taking on that and the sadness and the loss of other people.”
Simon previously spoke about Gemma’s tragic death and how he missed her leukemia vital signs.

The former Blue Peter presenter appeared on This Morning in 2019 and admitted he had failed to respond to a bruise that had appeared on her skin, which she said had been on her body for a number of weeks.
ITV daytime presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield asked Simon if he recognized any of the symptoms at the time.
Simon replied, “Absolutely not. And some are so obvious now when I look back at what happened just days before Gemma fell seriously ill and was rushed to hospital and diagnosed.
“There was this big bruise on her thigh and I remember telling her where that was from and it was from a fall three weeks ago where she broke her foot but that bruise hadn’t gone away.
“It’s one of the telltale signs that something might be wrong.”
