Sinful customers who tricked shop owners out of ten 30 years ago to return money with interest

A SHOPKEEPER who was scammed by a 10 year old 30 years ago was given a surprise apology and his money returned – with interest.

Jim Barr said he has no recollection of the incident when a customer claimed they were swapped.

But it seems the guilt hasn’t faded as the hand-delivered sincere apology, received on New Year’s Day, becomes apparent.

It read: “I stole £10/€12 from you. I pretended to be my mother and da gave me £20 / €42, when they only gave me £10.

“You already know. You told me to go check again, I pretended to be and so you gave me another £10.”

Letter of thanks to Jim, who ran Barr’s newsstand and grocery store in Derry’s Cairnhill area, for “bringing no shame to my mother and child.”

It said the £40/€48 hidden inside the card was “plus interest” debt dating back about 30 years.

And it added that Jim was a “pillar of the community”, ending with: “God bless!”

Most read in The Irish Sun

Jim told Derry Magazine that many of his clients at the time were schoolchildren, often around the age of 11 or 12.

When he said he believed the writer was probably male, he said: “This is a man of faith and this must have been played by his conscience for many years.

“He gave me back £40, which is a profit of 10 bucks and one pound per year.

“Most people are good from the bottom up,” he said.

“You get a weird bad apple, but the way I look at it is that the person probably had a rough life and maybe that’s just how they were raised.”

“There’s no name or anything like that on it,” said Jim. You are talking about 30 years ago.

‘HARD ENOUGH’

“As you can see from the letter he or she sent down and it certainly has to say they gave me £20 and I have to tell them to come up to the house and check with their mother and their skin. You’re saying thirty years ago and £20 is £20. It’s going to be tough enough times.

“So they definitely came back and said their mother told them they gave them £20 so without hesitation I gave them the benefit of the doubt and gave them back the money. odd.”

Jim said he would donate £40 to charity.

He thanked the letter writer adding: “Play fair with them. I don’t have to thank God or anything like that but they said they would give me back the tenner again with a little interest, one pound a year.

“I am giving it to charity. I think it’s the best thing to do, pass it on to help some poor creature that needs it. “
