Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers has been praised for opening up about her abortion last year amid growing tension in the US over the possibility of a change in the law.
The 27-year-old took to social media to announce that she had an abortion while on tour last October and believes “everyone deserves that kind of access” after a draft of the comments. It was leaked that the US Supreme Court could overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide.
Bridgers wrote on Twitter: “I had an abortion last October while on tour.
“I planned to be a parent where they gave me the abortion pill. It was so easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access.”
The Grammy-nominated singer also posted a link to an abortion fund to donate to her 560,000 followers.
Bridgers is currently in a relationship with Commoner actor Paul Mescal. They debuted as a couple at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Film Gala in 2021 and officially took to Instagram a few weeks later.
Last week, the singer reportedly called Paul her fiancé over the weekend as the two split at Coachella as rumors continued to swirl around a potential engagement.
One user replied to her Twitter post saying: “I’m so proud of you for speaking up about this. It’s so important and it helps to remove the stigma around it, making others feel It’s better to share their own stories, this takes courage. And I’m so proud of the bravery with which you’ve shared this.”
Another said: “I’ve never heard a Phoebe Bridgers song but this tweet makes me want to. Thank you for sharing your story. Abortion is hard to talk about.”
A third added: “I’m so proud of you for doing what’s best for you. And thank you for all your support so other women have abortion rights.”

US President Joe Biden had earlier opposed the Supreme Court’s “radical” draft comments and warned that other rights such as same-sex marriage and birth control could be at risk if the ruling is ruled out. Roe v Wade is overturned.
It is believed that if the court upheld the decision, about half of the states would introduce a ban on abortion.
In a statement released on social media, Mr Biden said, “I believe that women’s right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for nearly fifty years, and fundamental equity and The stability of our laws requires that it not be overturned.”
