Sinn Féin promises to give all health graduates a job guarantee

Sinn Féin has pledged to give all healthcare graduates a job guarantee to tackle “chronic shortages” in some sectors.

The party’s health spokesman, David Cullinane, said that when Sinn Féin enters government it would create a “seamless transition” that would result in health graduates moving straight from college into a job.

“We’re going to give all healthcare graduates a job guarantee and to me that makes sense, it’s a very powerful statement. We want everyone who takes a health course in Ireland to work in the public health system,” he said.

“We will direct the HSE to go to the [higher education institutes]work with these trainees, show them what job opportunities are where and make sure there is a seamless transition from completing their education and courses to entering the public system.”

Mr Cullinane said there were problems hiring staff in nursing and domestic help, as well as training doctors, health workers and community therapists.

“There are areas where there is a real chronic staffing shortage and those are areas that we need to focus on.”

Asked about reports that many healthcare graduates are choosing to emigrate because of low wages and very long hospital stays, Mr Cullinane said a “commitment” needed to be made to improve these problems.

He said hospitals needed to have a “safe staffing system” that would provide the right number of specially trained nurses or doctors at the right time.

It comes as the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (INMO) said there were 540 admitted patients waiting for beds across the country, according to Trolley Watch this morning.

It said 460 patients were waiting in emergency rooms while 80 were in other wards at the affected hospitals.

Separately, the latest figures show that the Health Protection Surveillance Center (HPSC) has been notified of 2,098 PCR-confirmed cases of Covid-19.

In addition, as of Tuesday April 12, 2,630 people registered a positive antigen test via the HSE portal.

At 8 a.m. today, 933 Covid-19 patients were hospitalized, 58 of whom were in intensive care units. Sinn Féin promises to give all health graduates a job guarantee
