Sinn Féin’s alternative budget will give families and workers a break, says Sligo/Leitrim TD Martin Kenny

Sinn Féin TD for Sligo/Leitrim Martin Kenny said his party’s alternative budget would give workers and families a break.

Our proposals are about giving workers and families support and reassurance to get through the winter months, while building for the future and providing the housing and health care that is needed.

“We are making different policy choices than this government, prioritizing support for people on middle and low incomes and a younger generation who are excluded from all opportunities. This means an emergency cost of living package is an essential part of what needs to be provided to help workers and families across Sligo and Leitrim with the cost of living crisis.

“Workers and families need immediate action and help, and our actions are commensurate with the magnitude of the impact on people’s lives. These include cutting households’ electricity bills, putting a month’s rent into tenants’ pockets with a loan and banning rent increases. In addition, we also propose a cut in USC to increase workers’ wage packages, as well as a two-thirds reduction in childcare fees. We have also included an increase in social security contributions of at least €15.

“Our proposals also include a priority to protect jobs by helping businesses with the unprecedented rise in their energy bills, putting many local businesses in the region I represent at risk of being closed by Christmas.

“As well as dealing with the immediacy of the cost of living crisis, we must start planning for the future by building homes and building better public services. This forward planning is evident in our proposals to provide 20,000 social and affordable housing and a complete overhaul of the current retrofit program with a focus on more equitable retrofit support that will benefit rural areas at lower and middle income levels.

“We have also included proposals for reducing healthcare costs and workforce planning to manage healthcare waiting lists.

“This budget has to be about change and what really matters to people. We cannot continue to see a warming up of old tired policies that have failed under successive Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael governments.

“We need fresh ideas and a change of direction. That’s what Sinn Féin’s alternative budget is about, to give workers and families across Sligo and Leitrim a break,” he said. Sinn Féin’s alternative budget will give families and workers a break, says Sligo/Leitrim TD Martin Kenny
