Sir Mark Todd faces disciplinary action this week after a clip of him whipping a horse with a branch went viral.

The Olympian-turned-race coach will appear before the independent panel on Thursday. It comes after the 66-year-old appeared in the TikTok clip that was widely shared last month. Todd, who is apologizing for his actions, has been temporarily suspended by the British Horseracing Authority while the circumstances surrounding the video are investigated.

This meant he could not run horses in Britain or Ireland during this period. Later this week, members of a BHA panel will investigate whether Todd is in breach of rule (J)19 – by engaging in conduct which tarnishes the reputation of horse racing in Britain by hitting a horse with a branch multiple times on the 29th proposes August 2020.

A BHA statement released on February 16 read: “The chairman of British Racing’s independent judiciary panel today approved a request by the BHA that Sir Mark Todd’s training license should be provisionally suspended following the emergence over the weekend of a video, which shows him beating a horse with what appears to be a branch.

“This provisional suspension means that while the investigation into the circumstances of this incident continues, Sir Mark will be unable to race in the UK or internationally. The coach has admitted that the person involved in the video was himself, apologized for his actions and agreed to a temporary ban.

“On Sunday, the BHA condemned the video and confirmed it was investigating the incident. The BHA will provide further updates in due course but cannot comment on the details of the investigation until it is complete.

“The provisional suspension has been approved on the basis that it may be reviewed at a later date at the request of either party.”

Sir Mark Todd is a two-time Olympic champion in eventing

The horse in the video clip, which was widely shared on social media, hesitated to cross a water hazard. Todd’s actions were widely criticized and led to his resigning from his role with World Horse Welfare. The trainer, who had 13 racetrack winners in 2021, apologized “to the horse and everyone involved”.

“One of the most important things I preach is building a mutual respect between horse and rider and that patience and kindness is the best way to get results,” he added.

“I believe that, along with a great empathy for animals, is one of the main attributes that has enabled me to have a long and successful career in eventing. I’m very disappointed in myself that I didn’t comply in this case.”
