Sir Rod Stewart phoned the news program to offer to pay for the hospital scan

Sir Rod Stewart called a phone segment on Sky News live to offer to pay people to be screened at the hospital, amid a growing number of people on the NHS waiting list.

famed musician Sir Rod, 78, who was watching a segment of Your Say on Thursday while building his model railway at home, made an unscheduled appearance after hearing people’s stories of trying try to access health care.

He said the situation was “ridiculous”, compared to how easily he could afford private healthcare and get scans at an “empty” clinic.

Sir Rod told the program: “I want to pay for 10 or 20 scans, or whatever.

“I don’t know how we (will) deal with this and hope that some others follow suit, because it seems ridiculous that this particular scan clinic is empty.

“There are people who die because they are not scanned.

“I don’t need advertising. I just want to do some good and this, I think, is a good thing, because if other people follow me, I will like it.”

Nurses, ambulance workers and other NHS staff have taken strike action in recent months, with more strikes planned in the coming weeks.

Sir Rod, a Conservative voter, also called for the NHS to be “rebuilt” with “billions” of pounds.

Sir Rod, who has had six chart-topping hits in the UK, added: “Personally I’ve been with the Conservative Party for a long time but I think this Government should step up now and hand it over to the Party. Labor does it, because this is heartbreaking for the nurses.

“It is painful. In all my years living in this country, I have never seen it so bad and anything I can do to help.

“Poor nurses, I’m on your side.”

Sir Rod also said: “This is a bad time for us in the UK, it really is. Change the damn government.

He added: “It is very sad. I’m so proud to be British and I can’t stand this.”
