Six beaches in Sussex are affected by sewage discharges

Sussex was hit with rain all day yesterday, flooding surface water in many places.

Southern Water has previously warned it expects discharges from drains made up of storm overflow and sewage following heavy rains following thunderstorms.

Southern Water’s Beachbuoy Chart recorded releases at bathing spots in Shoreham, Southwick, Hove, Saltdean, Seaford, Bexhill and Hastings yesterday.

The Bexhill and Hastings releases were halted in the early hours of the morning, while the others were all halted yesterday.

All of this “may have affected the water quality”.

A release from a pipe off the Shoreham coast was active for almost four hours yesterday, potentially affecting bathing spots in Shoreham, Southwick and Hove.

Several releases totaling more than six and a half hours were carried out in a pipe at sea in Saltdean yesterday.

A drain pipe near Newhaven released a storm overflow for almost 11 hours yesterday. This can affect the water quality in Seaford.
