SIX The Musical – A Review of Eleanor Hindman, The Weald

SIX premiered in 2017 and has since garnered widespread attention from both history buffs and theater enthusiasts alike. From dazzling costumes to stunning vocals, this production has it all.

Even if you’re not the usual theatergoer, don’t miss the opportunity to relive your GCSE History days while having fun!

Running at just 80 minutes, time flies as you are transported into the lives of six of history’s most famous women and hear their stories from a uniquely compelling perspective.

The musical was first written in 2017 by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the production is based on the lives and stories of Henry VIII’s six wives. From Katharine of Aragon to Katharine Parr, the musical, or should I say concert, explores the hardships and Challenges they all faced in a time of extreme inequality and gender division.

Despite addressing some difficult themes, the musical maintained its upbeat and enthusiastic tone while addressing and spreading awareness of atrocities that were all too common for women in the 16th century.

While the story was set in the past, the costumes were downright run-of-the-mill. With sequins and glitter bursting at the seams, costume designer Gabriella Slade transformed the stage into a 21st-century Tudor dynasty, with subtle references to each queen’s life and qualities sewn into color and sparkle.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a musical without a key element: singing that will knock you out of your seat. Marlow and Moss’ work is performed in breathtaking crescendos, with each pop-style song filling the theater with awe and emotion.

One of the best features of the musical has to be the all-female band that took the stage alongside the six queens, each of whom added to the brilliance of the show and atmosphere.

Susan Hindman describes the performance as “an uplifting experience that really brings the story to life.”

SIX is nothing short of a dramatic turning point for the entire theatrical experience, proving that the lives of six of history’s most famous women do not go unrecognized as parts of a man’s story.

Captivating and thought provoking, SIX the musical is a beautiful masterpiece that everyone should see.

Last but not least, you’ll leave the theater better informed than before, and you might even find yourself Googling the names of the six queens on the train ride home.—review-eleanor-hindman-weald/?ref=rss SIX The Musical – A Review of Eleanor Hindman, The Weald
