Slack overhauls iPad app with its desktop app-inspired look

Slack is giving its iPad app a much-needed upgrade to show it inherits many of the features of its desktop version, company announced. The app is getting a new two-column layout showing the list of available channels and messages on the left and their content on the right. The left sidebar is also being updated, and the app is getting better support for accessibility features like Apple’s VoiceOver screen reader.

None of these are particularly revolutionary features, but they are welcome additions to an iPad app that can sometimes feel more like a giant iPhone app. Slack is marketing the update to cater to the needs of emerging hybrid workplaces, which will hopefully make it easier to stay on top of workplace conversations on the go.

The upgraded sidebar of the Slack iPad app sounds particularly useful. Sections are collapsible if you want to hide channel groups; the channel name can be long pressed to access the context menu; and usernames will now include an avatar in direct messages, making it easier to identify at a glance. The way sections are set up will now also sync with the desktop version of Slack, to make it easier to stay neat and organized.

Finally, there are accessibility improvements as well. Support for Apple’s VoiceOver screen reader has been improved, as has Dynamic Type font scaling to make text easier to read.

Slack says the new iPad version will be available to download today, with further improvements – such as keyboard shortcuts support and “additional support for accessories” – coming later this year.
