Sligo withdraw from U20 hurling championship

Sligo GAA have confirmed they will not field a team at this year’s U-20 hurling championship as planned, citing mixed commitments from squad members for the withdrawal.

A statement released late Tuesday night said the county was struggling to put together a roster due to “a small game pool” and “other player demands … from other hurl commitments, college, etc.”, adding that the team could not adequately prepare for this year’s competition.

As a result, Sligo now give a free-kick to Derry, who they were drawn against in the first round of next weekend’s competition.

“This is not a decision we ever wanted to make and we do so with regret,” said Sligo chairman Sean Carroll.

“But after talking to the team management, we had no other choice. It’s a real shame because it’s exactly the kind of competition we’d love to be in, to attract players for the benefit of clubs and national teams.” Sligo withdraw from U20 hurling championship
