Small Batch Coffee in Church Road, Hove would like to sell alcohol

A COFFEE shop wants a liquor license to serve alcohol, but a competitor has objected to its plans.

The Small Batch Coffee Company has applied for a drinks license – from 12pm to 10pm – at one of their premises in Hove. The address is on Church Road although the front door is on Wilbury Road.

The company has agreed a draft license terms with Sussex Police which includes restricting alcohol sales to those seated at tables and being served by waiters. Drinkers are not allowed to stand at a bar.

And bountiful food would need to be available at all times, with menus “clearly displayed” at the venue.

However, Church Road is in an area that Brighton and Hove City Council has designated as a ‘area of particular stress’.

The council has stricter licensing rules for the special stress area to try to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

However, as Small Batch has agreed to a “cafe style” facility with a 10pm closing time, its application is in line with Council guidelines.

However, an objection from a competing company means that a three-member licensing board will be asked to rule on the application.

The objector’s details were redacted on the council’s website, but the company feared the request could result in the venue becoming a “wet” bar.

The respondent said: “It is important to recognize that while the current operator may intend to maintain its existing business model and add only a minor and occasional alcohol sales aspect to its operation, in the event of the sale of the lease and transfer of the licence, a new The operator could focus much more on selling alcohol, effectively turning it into a wet-led venue.

“We would expect there to be a stipulation that alcohol would only be sold in connection with the sale of food or something along those lines.

“If there is any possibility that the venue can operate effectively as a bar (whether waiter service or not), it should be treated similarly to other establishments in the local area.”

The Council Licensing Panel is scheduled to meet virtually on Tuesday at 10am. The hearing will be webcast on the Council’s website.
