Smaller gang rape by 8 men who filmed abuse, video released: report

A 17-year-old girl was reportedly raped repeatedly in Rajasthan, India, by eight men who filmed the abuse and later released the footage online when she could not pay the amount demanded.

The teenager’s father filed a complaint with police on Thursday after receiving video of his daughter’s gang rape that had been circulating for some time, the Hindustan Times reported.

Police said the girl initially did not tell anyone about the sexual assault or the extortion. After her father discovered the footage, the girl explained the sequence of events to her family.

In his complaint, the father alleged that his daughter was raped in December 2021 by eight young men from the town of Bhiwadi in Rajasthan, not far from where he lived. The father said the group filmed the abuse and blackmailed her.

In January this year, the girl was allegedly gang raped again by the accused and then forced to pay £50,000 ($612) so they would not release the footage, authorities said.

The men later allegedly demanded more money, this time 2.5 lakh ($3,317), police said.

When the girl could not pay the amount, the men allegedly published the video on the Internet.

The girl was medically examined, police said.

No further details were disclosed in the report. It is unclear if the suspects have been identified and if arrests have been made.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, Rajasthan had the highest number of rape cases in India at 6,337 in 2021. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh followed.

A total of 20,937 rape cases were recorded in Rajasthan between 2015 and 2019, Tribune India reported, citing Union Home Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra. This was the second-highest number among states in India, with only Madhya Pradesh recording more cases.

This comes not long after six people, including a woman, were arrested in the kidnapping and gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in India.

The parents of the minor, who hails from the town of Ramganj Mandi in Rajasthan, reported the teenager missing on September 14. She was rescued by police from Shivaji Park under the borders of Udyog Nagar Police Station on September 18, The Times of India reported.

The girl later told authorities she boarded a train from Ramganj Mandi to Kota on September 14, as recommended by one of her supervisors at school.

In Kota, a young man who is friends with her senior is said to have taken her and held her hostage in several locations, where she said she had been raped by several people. Finally, four days later, they dropped her off near Shivaji Park.

The girl said she did not know any of the accused.

The arrested persons were between 18 and 27 years old.

Ramganj Mandi Police Station Deputy Sub-Inspector Ronak Ali, who was involved in the investigation into the 14-year-old girl’s case, has been accused of negligence and misconduct in the case.

He has since been suspended and investigations into the allegations against him are ongoing.
