Smoke billowed into the air as flames spread across a field near a nursing home.
Residents at the Walberton Place Care Home on Yapton Lane were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters worked to battle the blaze.
Five fire engines and a West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service SUV were called to the scene around 5pm yesterday afternoon.
Firefighters stayed in the field to steam down and ensure there were no more hot spots and stayed on site into the evening.
A fire service spokeswoman said the risk of serious wildfires was very high, with the Met Office warning that fires breaking out in Sussex could potentially be “exceptionally severe” early in the weekend.
She said: “The Met Office’s heatwave warning remains in place for the coming days and the risk of wildfires will remain extremely high.
“We ask all residents to be considerate”
