Snapchat is introducing a new in-app tool to give parents more insight into how their teens are using Snapchat without compromising their kids’ privacy.
amily Center shows parents their children’s friends list and who is communicating with them – but it does not show the content of conversations.
The opt-in tool requires that a parent and child’s Snapchat accounts be friends in order to connect and set up Family Center, from which parents can also confidentially report any accounts related to their child that they have concerns about to have.
“Family Center is meant to reflect the way parents interact with their teens in the real world, where parents typically know who their teens are friends with and when they’re hanging out — but don’t overhear their private conversations,” Snapchat said in a blog post , which announces the tool.
“To help develop Family Center, we have worked with families to understand the needs of parents and teenagers, recognizing that everyone’s approach to parenting and privacy is different.
“We also consulted with online safety and wellbeing experts to incorporate their feedback and insights. Our goal was to create a set of tools that reflect the dynamics of real-life relationships and encourage collaboration and trust between parents and teenagers.”
A number of other social media platforms have introduced tools to allow parents to see more of what their children are doing on their websites as part of efforts to improve user safety – as the issue grows more scrutinized and a number of countries continue to work on internet safety legislation.
Snapchat also confirmed that it is releasing a new set of resources to help parents and children have open conversations about online safety and that it will be adding more features to Family Center in the coming months, including new tools for Content control for parents.
“Our goal is to empower parents and teens in a way that protects a teen’s autonomy and privacy. We look forward to continuing to work closely with families and online safety experts to continue to improve Family Center over time,” Snapchat’s blog post reads.
