Solihull: Warning to parents after three boys die in tragedy on an ice lake

Parents and carers have been urged to remind their children of the dangers of the ice following the deaths of three boys, aged eight, 10 and 11 crashed through ice into a lake near Birmingham.

West Midlands Police say a search of Lake Babbs Mill in Kingshurst, Solihull, near Birmingham is continuing but “officers have had no contact from anyone suggesting someone else is still missing”.

A fourth boy, aged six, remains hospitalized in critical condition after being pulled from the water by rescue workers, including a police officer, who tried to cut through ice during the rescue effort.

Emergency services were first called to the scene at 2.36pm on Sunday, where it was reported that four children had been playing on the ice and had fallen into the lake.

In an update on Monday morning, West Midlands Police said: “Three boys have tragically died after falling into the lake at Babbs Mill Park in Solihull yesterday afternoon.

“The boys, aged 11, 10 and 8, were taken to hospital after being pulled from the water.

“Unfortunately, they could not be resuscitated and our thoughts are with their family and friends at this deeply devastating time. We will have specialized officials to offer them as much support as possible.

Advice for parents after three boys die after ice fall

West Midlands Fire Service Area Commander Richard Stanton also offered advice to parents as he described the tragic events as a “strong reminder” of the dangers of the open water.

He said: “Yesterday’s incident is a stark reminder to all of us of the dangers of open water, particularly during the winter months.

“Frozen lakes, ponds, canals and reservoirs can look picturesque, but they can be deadly, and there are no greater warnings than yesterday’s tragic events.

“We ask parents and carers to remind their children of the dangers of ice and why they need to stay away from it. Please help us so that something like this doesn’t happen again.”
