Sonic Frontiers – Tips for Beginners

SONIC Frontiers is out now and despite some previous missteps in the series, Blue Blur is making waves among fans.
It’s a bigger world than we’ve seen before in a Sonic game, with dozens of missions, combo-based combat, and even an RPG-style skill tree.
Sonic Frontiers is very different from all other games in the series, which left players a bit confused.
We’ve broken down all the new features and mechanics to help you zoom your way through Sonic Frontiers.
Upgrade your pig
A number of Sonic’s stats, such as speed, ring capacity, and power, can all be upgraded along your journey.
Completing missions, collecting collectibles, and exploring the world will reward you with different types of currency that you can spend on upgrades.

The tall, mossy, ruin-like creature Hermit Koco will boost your stats in exchange for these currencies.
Master your homing attack
The Homing Attack is your primary attack and can be used for both platforming and combat.
If the enemy isn’t attacking or defending in combat, you can use this attack repeatedly to get an easy kill.
Additional attacks are unlocked through abilities, so it’s best to save these for early in your journey.
Learn your movement combinations
Sonic Frontiers is all about platforms, and you’ll have to dash around loops, pilot balloons, shoot through the air, slam on the ground, grind rails, and more as you explore.
Some challenges are easily overcome by mastering all of the different move combinations that Sonic is capable of.
Pay close attention to the buttons you use when you come across these sections.
Give yourself a boost
Boosting is done by holding down the right trigger, and this should be done as often as possible.
Sometimes you can boost infinitely, so make the most of it while you can.
Many challenges and bosses require you to use the boost almost constantly to get past them, so remember to memorize this button.
Burst by Boost
Once you have the maximum number of rings, you can access a new attack called Burst Boost.
This is a stronger and faster version of the regular boost and can charge your cyloops.
A smaller capacity can help with this, but a large number of rings is also useful.
Unlock your Sonic Boom
Sonic Boom is one of your unlockable skills where Sonic unleashes a barrage of attacks at high speed.
It is very powerful and can melt through enemies’ health bars.
This should be your primary attack against bosses and one of the first skills you want to unlock.
Accelerate cyclops
Cyloops are when you run around an enemy and flip or damage them.
Some enemies will require you to use this technique before you can even attack.
Press the cyloop button during the attack combo and you’ll perform a quick cyloop, but it has to be unlocked first.
Complete battle combos
The more skills you unlock, the more ways you have to tackle battles.
Most start with your basic homing attack, then swap out the middle of the combo to perform another ability.
Homing attacks can be combined with Ground Slams, Cyloops or Sonic Booms to deal big damage.
Overcome difficult terrain
Sonic can overcome just about any obstacle that comes his way.
The more you explore a structure, the more springs, grinding rails, and platforms you’ll find, allowing you to explore it further.
These hard-to-find areas often contain items that can be used to enhance Sonic’s abilities, so they’re worth seeking out.
Complete ruins as you find them
Ruins are retro sonic levels or new levels in 2D or 3D style.
These give you four challenges that give you keys to progress further in the main story.
Try to tick all the boxes so you have the best chance to keep exploring.
