Sandbox Entertainment President/CEO Jason Owen and Sony Music Entertainment(SME)’s Premium Content division has signed a development agreement to create a series of original long-form projects across multiple platforms and distributors.
Under the multi-year agreement, Sandbox Productions and SME will jointly create, produce, and distribute scripted and unscripted content across television, film, and digital formats, including broadcast June Carter Cash documentary.
Owen is the co-chairman of Monument Records (an imprint of Sony Music Entertainment).
Prior to founding Sandbox Entertainment in 2010, he was also the SVP of Artist Development and Marketing for Universal Music Group Nashville and Senior Director of Marketing and Talent Relations at Columbia TriStar Television.
With access to Cash Estate, including “never heard of” interviews with Cash family members and archival footage, the June Carter film will trace June Carter’s origins and sonic journey her music, said Sandbox Productions and SME.
The companies also collaborated on the launch of LOVE, TOMa film narrated by musician Tom Douglas and nominated for a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Golden Globe.
Sandbox Productions and SME say Sandbox’s partnership with SME will enable them to consult and collaborate with a network of writers, directors, screen talent, music artists and visual artists to deliver creative orientation on new and developing projects.
SME’s Premium Content division will distribute and fund all joint ventures.

In November 2021SME has signed an agreement with Snapchat to include music by the record company’s major artists in the app’s licensed music library.
