Sony pulls Crunchyroll, home entertainment release from Russia

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) has suspended all operations in Russia, halting home entertainment releases such as Spider-Man: There’s no way homeand temporarily blocked access to the anime streaming service, Crunchyroll, according to a report from Diversity. The move will also halt all TV distribution contracts in the country.

“We stand with the many businesses around the world that have now suspended their business in Russia and support the humanitarian efforts currently underway in Ukraine and the surrounding region,” said SPE CEO. Tony Vinciquerra said in an email to employees Diversity. “We have also paused planned home entertainment releases, including ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and any future TV distribution deals. And just this morning, Crunchyroll suspended its anime streaming service in Russia.”

Sony, which owns the anime streaming service Funimation, bought Crunchyroll last August and later announced that they would merge both services – A process has begun. As pointed out by ComicBook.coma translated message on Crunchyroll’s Russian website says it is “forced to suspend its operations in Russia” and notes that users will not be charged for their subscriptions while the service is inefficient in the country. Funimation is available not available in Russia.

Sony pulled Morbius and other theatrical releases in the future from Russia last month, with Sony ownership PlayStation suspends all sales and deliveries back home earlier this week. Sony’s music division has announced that closed its operations in Russia on Thursday.
