A new report states that in the future, Sony will require some developers to create time-limited demos for any game that costs consumers $34/€33/￥4000 or more.
This is what subscribers would see PlayStation Plus Premium Receive demos of all major titles.
According to sources speaking to Game Developer, studios that create lower-cost games don’t need to create trials.
The report states that developers were not officially notified of the new policy, instead the information came from an update to Sony’s developer portal.
With the new policy, this means that studios developing upcoming games must invest the budget, effort and time into creating these test versions. The new requirement is not retroactive and does not apply to VR titles.
Developers are given three months after release on PlayStation Store to make a timed trial available to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers and it must be available to users for 12 months.
Should a studio wish to create a custom demo for the stage instead, Sony will have that option, but such demos must be approved on a case-by-case basis.
Custom demos, free weekends and limited game trials available to all PlayStation owners may continue to be offered by developers.
When asked about the new policy, Sony didn’t respond to the game developer at press time.
At launch, PlayStation Plus Premium includes all the perks you get with the current PlayStation Plus, plus a library of 400 PS4 and PS5 games to download to your consoles. It also adds PS1, PS2 and PSP classic games, time-limited trials and PS3/PS4 game streaming.
This level of service gets you $17.99/€16.99/£13.49 per month, $49.99/€49.99/£39.99 for three months, or $119.99/€119.99/99 £.99 a year back.
The revamped PlayStation Plus service launches June 13th in Americas and June 22nd in Europe.
