Sony unveils the new Walkman 44 years after the original model – and it has three genius tricks

SONY has introduced a brand new Walkman – and no, you didn’t accidentally go back in time.
The Japanese tech giant has just announced its latest compact music player.
The new Sony Walkman NW-A306 might sound like a throwback, but it’s new for 2023.
Sony’s original Walkman (which played cassettes) was released back in 1979 – that’s 44 years ago.
But you may not have noticed that Sony has been releasing new Walkman models for years.
The Walkman was designed to handle CDs and eventually digital audio – and the new model does just that.
“The NW-A306 is designed for discerning users looking for quality sound and style,” Sony explained.
It’s fully WiFi compatible, weighs just 113 grams and has a 3.6-inch touchscreen.
But it also has tactile physical music controls for that retro feel.
It has three big tricks that audio fans will love.
The first is that it offers a whopping 36 hours of battery life, so you can listen to your digital audio collection forever.
There’s also an AI-powered “upscaler” that uses computer guesswork to improve the quality of your digital music files.
“The restoration of acoustic subtlety and dynamic range provides a richer, more complete listening experience,” Sony explained.
And it has a built-in Music app that lets you stream music that you haven’t downloaded yet.
But it’s not going to be cheap: it costs £350 (which is around $425).
The original Sony Walkman is one of the most iconic devices of all time.
Production of cassette-based Walkmans only ended in 2010.
But Sony has managed to flog a staggering 200 million units in that time.
