However, the gardai are now re-examining a claim they encountered on Cape Clear Island in 1995.

Gardai has begun examining photos from a festival on an island near Cork, which may cast doubt on his claim that the two have never met.

The preliminary review process by expert cold case investigators from Dublin is said to have been completed.

A report will be sent to Assistant Commissioner Garda John O’Driscoll. He will then decide whether a new investigation should be conducted into the murder.

When contacted by the Irish Sun, Bailey said he had no comment on the new claims.

This news came to light when the Pearse Street cold gardener came across a statement by Mark McCarthy, of Schull, made at the Pearse Street garden station on October 3, 1997.

“I’ve known Ian Bailey for about five years now,” he said. He’s a journalist and he’s British. He is also a poet and is over 40 years old.

“I remember meeting him on the RTÉ news earlier this year and he said on the news that he had never met the woman, I mean Sophie Du Plantier.

“I think this is weird because I went to Cape Clear in the summer of 1995 at a storytelling festival. I was there and Ian Bailey was there too, and so was the French woman Sophie du Plantier.

“I didn’t know Sophie du Plantier at the time but I recognized her later when I saw pictures of her in newspapers and on television.

“I have no doubt, but she was the woman who was at the festival that summer.

“When I met her at the festival, I saw her talking to Ian Bailey. I didn’t hear their conversation, but it was an occasion where people talked to people. “

The established Miss Toscan du Plantier was murdered at her holiday home in Schull in December 1996.

No one has ever been charged with her murder. In 2019, a French court convicted Ian Bailey of murder in absentia, but he has always denied any involvement in her death.
