South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir announce UK tour of their Grammy-winning album

South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir has announced a UK tour of its Grammy-winning album.

The group will perform their 2018 Freedom album, which celebrates and commemorates the freedom struggle of South Africa’s “democracy movement” and the life of the country’s former President, Nelson Mandela.

The tour begins on October 15th at the Darlington Hippodrome, travels across the UK and runs through October 26th.

The gospel choir hails from Soweto, a city outside of Johannesburg and home of Nelson Mandela and South Africa’s democracy movement.

Their albums “Blessed”, “African Spirit” and “Freedom” respectively won the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2007, 2008 and 2019.

The group has entertained audiences around the world for nearly two decades and have shared the stage with some of music’s biggest names, including U2, the late Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This will be her first time in London since 2006 and, apart from a performance in Edinburgh, her first time in the UK in 10 years.

The upcoming tour, the choir says, will perform from their “uplifting and joyful repertoire” freedom songs celebrating the life of Mandela, as well as international gospel classics and a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and the classic “Amazing Grace.”

Producer Andrew Kay said: “The members of the Soweto Gospel Choir are thrilled to be touring the UK after so many years away.

“The group continue to inspire fans around the world, but the reaction we’re getting from UK audiences is unforgettable.

“We hope our uplifting message of hope, faith and joy will reach audiences new and old in this special return visit as we celebrate the legacy of the great Nelson Mandela.”

The tour is scheduled to start at the Darlington Hippodrome on October 15th and travel across the UK including Wolverhampton, London, Malvern, Aberystwyth, Manchester, Birmingham, Hull and finish in Bradford on October 26th.
