Spain arrests Ukrainian blogger accused of “high treason” by KIEV – POLITICO

A Ukrainian blogger and politician accused by Kyiv of “treason” has been arrested in Spain, police said on Thursday.

The Security Service of Ukraine called She, along with Spanish authorities and Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, had carried out a “multi-stage special operation” to arrest Anatoly Shariy, a blogger-turned-politician whom she has accused of “incitement to hatred”. A spokeswoman for the Spanish police confirmed that Shariy had been arrested.

In a Facebook post after the arrest, the Security Service of Ukraine said called there was “reason to believe” that Shariy was acting “on behalf” of foreign agents. “This detention is further proof that every traitor to Ukraine will sooner or later receive his deserved punishment,” the security service added.

It remains unclear why the Spanish authorities are now arresting Shariy, considering that the Ukrainian security services filed first Charges against the blogger in February 2021.

Shariy, once known for his investigations into alleged corruption in the Ukrainian government, was widely accused from Ukrainian media and politicians peddling pro-Kremlin narratives to his large online following. Shariy firmly denies the allegations, once praised To award 1,000 euros to anyone who can prove pro-Russian content in their posts.

The blogger, who has almost 3 million subscribers on YouTube alone, fled Ukraine 10 years ago, claiming to have been persecuted by the Kiev authorities and was granted political asylum in Lithuania. 2021 Vilnius withdraw his permanent residence permit and declared him persona non grata, although Shariy had already moved to Spain by that time.

In response to his arrest, Shariy sent Emojis branding pigs and clowns from Ukraine’s security service on Twitter while ask his followers for donations on his Telegram channel.

The blogger will now allegedly be transported to Madrid, where a judge will decide on his extradition to Ukraine. Corresponding Constitution of UkraineHigh treason carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years, incitement to hatred carries a maximum penalty of eight years in prison.
