Spain awarded best value for money holiday destination – see full list

Spain tops the value for money list with 92 out of 100 points. Spain’s Canary Islands came second with 91 and Greece third

The British have named Spain the most effective holiday hotspot on the Costa.

The mainland, which includes the popular resorts of Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, topped the value-for-money list with a score of 92 out of 100.

According to a survey of 2,000 adults, the Spanish-owned Canary Islands came second with 91. Greece finished third with 89 points.

Post Office Travel Money research also placed Turkey, Portugal, Croatia and Mexico in the top 10.

Bulgaria, traditionally a bargain destination, dropped out of the top 10 to 12th, trailing Thailand, Malta and Cyprus by 80 points. And while France and Italy are popular destinations, they were seen as expensive destinations to travel to.

France finished 22nd out of 26 destinations and Italy 17th.

Expensive Scandinavia received the lowest score at just 42 points, while Dubai was at the bottom of the table at 44. The research also revealed that sun-seekers traveling to Turkey will get more bang for their buck this year due to a strong pound in the lire.

Nick Boden, head of Post Office Travel Money, said people “need to consider the costs they will incur at resorts abroad before taking the plunge and booking a holiday”.

He advised: “While people are weighing the cost of flights and accommodation or package deals they need to look at the pound as that will make a significant difference to the overall cost. By choosing destinations like Turkey in Europe or further afield Thailand or Mexico they could save real money.”
