Despite boarding her flight from Glasgow to Alicante without any problems, she was unable to locate her passport when she landed in Spain.

She didn’t realize it until she was on the airport shuttle bus – and was warned by staff that it might even have been thrown out by cleaners.

Her daughter Adele said she panicked and was then held overnight only to be “treated like a criminal” despite the slight mistake and only given rolls and water.

She told Glasgow Live: “She knows for sure she had it when she got on the plane as she had it open in case it needed to be checked. It wasn’t checked on the plane, so she put it back in her bag, which was then kept under the seat in front of her.”

Adele was forced to speak to the consulate, who told them to book a flight back to Glasgow with emergency documents.

However, this created further problems – not only could it take two days for the documents to arrive, Sharon was also not allowed to enter Spain as new rules dictate she had to have an official passport to be stamped.

Finally she was able to board a flight back to London the next day with “police escort” on both sides.

However, she arrived back in Gatwick and had to find her own way back to Glasgow.

Adele added: “She was in a terrible state. She said she didn’t even wash her face and felt so dirty and in tears.”

“I know rules are rules, but she was treated like a criminal – not just someone who accidentally lost her passport.”

To avoid this, Britons are advised to carry their passports with them at all times when travelling.

It’s not the first time someone has lost their passport during a flight.

In 2019, a family was stuck in Switzerland after their daughter forgot her passports on a plane.

And in 2018, a couple had to fly home after just 30 minutes of vacation because they lost their passports on the flight.

Here’s what to do if you lose your passport while on vacation.
