Splunk names Gary Steele as new CEO

Splunk has named Gary Steele as its new CEO three months after the surprise resignation of longtime CEO Doug Merritt.

“The board is focused on identifying a leader with a proven track record of scaling operations and growing multi-billion dollar companies,” Merritt said in a statement at the time.

We now know that Gary Steele, the founding CEO of software-as-a-service (SaaS) security provider Proofpoint, was a company he ran for almost 20 years. During that time, Steele navigated both an IPO in 2012 and an IPO Private Equity Buyout by Thoma Bravo last year. He starts on April 11th and then also takes a seat on the board of Splunk.

Best known for its security, logging and monitoring softwareSplunk has shifted the focus of its business model from on-premise to cloud-based SaaS usage, which adds to Steele’s strengths.

“Gary is a visionary leader whose software and cybersecurity expertise, deep understanding of SaaS and recurring revenue models, and unwavering commitment to driving innovation and customer success on a global scale for Splunk on our journey to $5B and beyond will be invaluable,” Splunk said interim CEO Graham Smith in a statement.
