Pourshasb joins Royal as Head of Global Artist & Label Partnerships and will oversee artist relations and music partnerships within the company.

Royal tells MBW that Pourshasb will focus on bringing a variety of artists to the platform, “from independent artists to icons.”

Co-founded by Justin Blau, aka musician and producer 3LAU, Royal launched last summer and aims to enable fractional music ownership through its own version of NFTs.

The company raised $55 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) in November that also attracted investment from the likes of The Chainsmokers, Nas, Logic, Stefflon Don, Kygo, Joyner Lucas and Disclosure.

In January, Royal let fans on the platform invest in hip-hop legend Nas’ music by buying shares in royalties earned from streaming two of his tracks.

Last month, Diplo became the next superstar artist to team up with Royal to sell shares of his streaming royalties.

Prior to Spotify, Pourshasb was VP of Global Partner Development at Sony Music Entertainment in New York, holding various roles at the major over a six-year period.

Between December 2015 and January 2018, Pourshasb served as Senior Director, Executive Office & Corporate Strategy at Sony Music and before that as Director, Executive Office & Corporate Strategy.

“Having seen the industry from both the label and streaming sides, I’m very excited about companies that are truly additive and expanding the pie rather than separating from existing players.”

Speaking to MBW, Darya Pourshasb said: “Having seen the industry from both the label and streaming sides, I’m very excited about companies that are truly additive and adding to the pie, rather than splintering from existing players separate.

“I’m also very excited about solutions aimed at fixing a creator economy that remains broken.

“Royal is doing just that, by allowing artists to open music ownership to fans – creating a new revenue stream and enabling a deeper connection with superfans and new audiences. This ultimately adds value for everyone involved, from streaming services and labels to of course artists and fans.

Pourshasb added: “As Head of Global Artist & Label Partnerships, I will be responsible for overseeing artist relations and our music partnerships. Since January, six incredible artists including Nas, Diplo and Tritonal have released music on Royal and shared ownership with fans.

“My main goal is to continue to grow this artist roster while building win-win partnerships across the industry. Building on a great early momentum, I will aim to bring a variety of artists to the platform, from independent artists to icons, spanning musical genres and markets.”

“We are delighted that she has decided to join us at Royal – it is a testament to the promise of putting music in the hands of fans.”

Justin Blue

Justin Blau said: “Darya joins us from Spotify and Sony Music, so brings extensive expertise in both streaming music and record labels.

“She understands the diverse needs and is able to create partnerships that benefit everyone.

“We are delighted that she has chosen to join us at Royal – it is a testament to the promise of music being held by fans when people deep within the music industry take this new approach mainstream .
