Ireland’s youth information charity has launched a new mental health campaign encouraging young people to be open about their feelings online.
punout is the first organization in Ireland to use the BeReal social media app as a communication tool to showcase ‘positive uses’ of the online world for young people’s mental health.
Once a day, BeReal notifies all users that it’s time to post to the app, giving them only two minutes to do so.
As a result, photos are unplanned and realistic, offering a glimpse of what users are up to on a daily basis without the pressure of getting a “perfect” shot.
Spunout, in partnership with Pluto The Agency, has teamed up with Instagram and TikTok content creators Caoimhe Byrne and James Doyle to launch the BeReal With How You Feel campaign.
The aim of this initiative is to create “deeper connections” among friends without the filters and “glitz and glamor of typical social media”.
The charity is asking people to use their daily BeReal moment to be honest with their friends.
It hopes to stimulate conversations about mental health and encourage healthier use of social media among 16-25 year olds.
The Mental Health Editor, Dr. Joseph Morning said social media remains the most popular method of communication for young people worldwide and must be used “forever”.
“As the leading youth mental health charity, we know the importance of communicating with young people where they are communicating with each other,” he said.
“That’s why we decided to launch the BeReal With How You Feel campaign to address the hypercurated life on other social media platforms that can negatively impact young people’s mental health.”
BeReal has had 28 million downloads since its launch, with this year accounting for 74.5 percent of the app’s downloads, an increase of 300 percent in monthly active users.
