Squirrels with Guns: the Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo You Didn’t Know You Needed

Just when we thought we’d seen it all, someone turned our world upside down with Unreal Engine 5. How did you do that? Well, they did a UE5 demo that originally showed a cute squirrel running around minding its own business. However, when the squirrel picked up a gun, we were really convinced.
First we’re treated to our furry friend wrapping his hands around a pistol grip while carrying the loaded sidearm around the little sandbox that was made for him. Their tiny hands can barely reach the trigger, so we don’t see them firing shots. That being said, we see them walking around on their hind legs while holding them up in a comedic way.
The video really comes into its own, however, when they grab a Mac 10 submachine gun while jumping in the air and using rapid fire to propel themselves to the top. See, we know everyone looks at cool Unreal Engine 5 demos and yells, “Wow, they should make this a full game!” but come on, this one certainly deserves it. You can watch the video below and you’ll see what we mean.
Aside from the obvious appeal, it’s worth noting that the fur effect looks pretty lush on this squirrel. Before the gunnery nonsense begins we can see the tracking shot up close and you can really see a massive amount of detail in the texture work. It’s impressive stuff!
We’ve covered a number of impressive Unreal Engine 5 projects on this page, ranging from some brilliant fan projects to future AAA games in development, but these totally original little demos are great for showing what those with a bit of creativity and development can do -Ability to extract know-how from the latest technology.
