Stanmer Park in Brighton has been awarded a green flag

BRIGHTON’s largest park has been recognized as one of the best in the country following a multi-million dollar restoration.

Stanmer Park has been awarded a Green Flag, recognizing the park as one of the best in the country, bringing the number of award-winning parks in Brighton and Hove to eight.

A £5.1million project to restore the park’s historic Walled Gardens, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Brighton and Hove City Council, Plumpton College and the South Downs National Authority, was completed last year.

Seven other parks in the city were again awarded the Green Flag for excellence; Easthill Park, Hove Park, Kipling Gardens, Preston Park, St Ann’s Well Gardens, Stoneham Park and The Level.

Councilwoman Amy Heley, co-chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “Over the past two years, green spaces have played a vital role for people during lockdown, as a place to relax, exercise and safely meet friends and family Family .

“That’s why I’m delighted that so many of our city parks have been awarded Green Flags – it’s fitting recognition for our dedicated staff, friend groups and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the quality is maintained, and our parks and gardens are a pleasure all year round.

“With green flags flying in parks in Brighton, Hove, Portslade and Rottingdean, this is a real city-wide success story.”

The Green Flag Awards scheme is managed by environmental organization Keep Britain Tidy under license from the Department for Leveling Up, Housing and Communities.

The awards recognize and reward well managed parks and green spaces and set the benchmark standard for green space management from across the UK and around the world.

Paul Todd, Keep Britain Tidy Accreditation Manager, congratulated everyone who helped Stanmer Park earn a Green Flag Award.

He said: “Stanmer Park and the other parks also receiving green flags this year are important green spaces for the Brighton and Hove community.

“This award is a testament to the hard work of staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award are maintained.”
