Star of upcoming Brighton art installation unveiled

THE star of a new ‘arts adventure’ coming to Brighton and Hove next year is to be announced tonight.

The organizers behind the Snowdogs and Snails installations will reveal what will be on display at an exhibition slated to come to town in September 2023.

The third such event aims to raise more funds for Martlets Hospice, with the figures being auctioned off at the end of the exhibition.

Two cryptic social media posts have hinted at what the new theme might be.

One post showed the manager of one of the charity’s stores donning a flat cap and holding a scarecrow and donkey, while another showed a member of the charity’s fundraising team with a garden fork.

Argus readers have had their guesses as to what the new character might be, which ranges from seagulls and bears to dolphins, giraffes and snowmen – in homage to Sussex author Raymond Briggs, who passed away earlier this year.

Organizers have confirmed that 50 of the new colorful characters will be ‘unleashed’ on the city streets next autumn, with the ‘new trailblazer’ being unveiled in an event tonight at 6pm.

The Argus got on board in 2016 with its own Snowdog sculpture called Newshound, decorated with newspaper pages.

The most recent installation in 2018 placed a total of 50 snails across the city, some of which were spotted outside some of Brighton and Hove’s most well-known landmarks, including the i360, Brighton Palace Pier and Brighton Station.

Welcoming the news that the art show would be returning after five years, Councilor Martin Osborne said: “This is exciting – I loved the snails so I’m wondering what this new avenue will be.

“It’s also for a great cause, so hopefully something we can all stand behind.” Star of upcoming Brighton art installation unveiled
