More and more snippets of information about Star Wars Jedi Survivor are being released, with the latest ones shedding more light on combat, traversal, and a new face for the series.
Speak with game informantDirector Stig Asmussen explained that players will discover “five fully realized in-game stances” for protagonist Cal Kestis, including a special dual-blade option and a Crossguard-style lightsaber inspired by Kylo Ren (both featured in the latest gameplay trailer seen). which you can see below).
As you might have guessed, Asmussen said it was “advantageous to use certain types of stances against certain types of enemies”. This, says the director, requires the player to “knock down the enemies and figure out what the best weapon of choice is.”
As for those weapons, when Jedi Survivor is released, Cal will have access to lightsabers and a blaster. The dual blade option mentioned above sees “Kestis spins and rotates its two separate blades at high speed”. Meanwhile, he can use his blaster at the same time as a lightsaber.
“It really speaks to where we find Cal in this part of the story,” Asmussen explained, calling Kestis an “unconventional Jedi.”
“It’s been five years since the first game, and the dark ages are still in full swing… he has to do unconventional things. So something that would be frowned upon at the height of the Jedi Order? Cal states that he will do whatever is necessary.”
Cal can also wield a Kylo Ren-style Crossguard-style lightsaber at the release of Jedi Survivor. This option offers players a “more confident approach” as it is “weighty”. [and] beefy”. However, that extra weight makes it a more cumbersome weapon of choice, meaning players need to be “very measured” in how they use it as “the time windows are longer [this] Blade”.
Asmussen also revealed that Cal’s journey across a galaxy far, far away will be joined by a new face – a mercenary named Bode Akuna. Bode can be seen briefly in the trailer above.
“[Akuna] and Cal form a special bond,” Asmussen explained of the overall Jedi survivor. “It’s almost like they’re brothers. They’re not exactly the same, but they really complement each other.”
Lastly, Asmussen touched on the new traversal techniques that Cal can use to navigate the game’s worlds. This includes an ascent cable for “climbing and traversing” while Cal can also “tame and ride” mounts.
“It’s a much broader Metroidvania approach,” Asmussen explained. “Cal can bridge huge gaps by chaining multiple types of abilities together. But it’s also about how we approach these mounts and how they are used to negotiate and rule the world.”
And that’s your lot for now, but I’m sure there’ll be a lot more revealed about the game soon. We will keep you informed.
