Starfield promises an entertaining space exploration to ‘solve humanity’s greatest mystery.’ This space meets sci-fi RPG from Bethesda, co-creators of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, as the first new IP in 25 years.
Naturally, Bethesda fans were bewildered. It doesn’t even matter that Starfield remains mostly a mystery. It’s clearly ‘a slightly harder role-playing game’, which really says something after Skyrim. However, as Bethesda releases each byte of news here and there, the pieces of information available come together into a more cohesive picture of story and gameplay.

Starfield release date
Starfield releases November 11, 2022 for Xbox Series X | S and PC. So while Bethesda is setting an early release date, fans are still pretty much ahead.
Microsoft first teased Starfield at E3 2018, then kept quiet about it until it dropped the new trailer and exact release date at E3 2021. Starfield is now set to be pre-released The Elder Scrolls 6.
Is Starfield an Xbox exclusive?
Starfield is actually an Xbox exclusive – or more specifically PC and Xbox Series X only | S. Microsoft has confirmed plans to let Xbox One players run the game through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Earlier in pre-production, there seemed to be some hope for a cross-platform release despite reports that Starfield won’t come to PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, official sources have confirmed rumors that Starfield will be an Xbox exclusive only.
Microsoft has redoubled its efforts to promote Xbox Game Pass over the past year and a half after announcing and releasing Xbox Series X | S. One way to add value to the service is to use the exclusive feature that the acquisition of an award-winning studio like Bethesda has enabled. It should come as no surprise, then, that Starfield launches as an Xbox exclusive.
Sony fans aren’t happy about Bethesda releasing Microsoft exclusives. Bethesda VP Pete Hines seemed sympathetic, saying he apologized but couldn’t do anything about it. On the bright side, Bethesda Executive Producer Todd Howard said it’s ‘hard to imagine’ The Elder Scrolls 6 being an exclusive – but these could change. All contracts that Bethesda has with competitors like Sony for Deathloop are also upheld.
In the US, GameStop is using Pre-order Starfield for $69.99. There are no other pre-orders at the time of writing.
In the UK, standard Starfield pre-orders are available at Game and Base. No collector’s editions have been published yet.
Remember: Xbox Game Pass membership requires no pre-order. Microsoft has been touting its Game Pass subscription, which seems like an increasingly valuable deal on many of the games you can download on Xbox or PC. Starfield is a confirmed Xbox Game Pass first release datewhich means subscribers will get access to it starting on launch day just by having an Xbox Game Pass.

At the time of this writing, Starfield doesn’t have much information about its gameplay other than Small suggestion from studio executives. In an interview with washington articles, Starfield director Todd Howard summed it up as “Skyrim in Space.” Bethesda CEO Ashley Cheng calls it ‘the Han Solo simulator.’ Istvan Pely, the game’s lead artist, seems to have dubbed the aesthetic of the game ‘NASA punk.’ So, at the very least, it implies a massive space adventure with gritty, futuristic overlays.
ONE Notes on the game’s website invites players to ‘create any character you want and explore with unparalleled freedom’, suitable for Character customization and open world elements advertised in the game.
In an interview with walkie talkie, Howard emphasizes Starfield’s degree of freedom. “We want to put you in a world where we don’t pull you by the nose and say you have to do X, Y and Z,” he said. So that could point to the same non-linear progression as in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – or maybe just the little details hidden behind every piece of the world.
Howard also explains that Starfield offers more character customization than any other Bethesda RPG, even allowing players to choose their setting. The main character, who appears to be the astronaut introduced in the trailer, is affiliated with a space organization called Constellation. However, the player can change factions during the game. Other alien races also appeared.
‘You know, can I read this book? Can I get this? Can I do this? What if I do this? What if I do this? And the game says ‘yes’ a lot,’ Howard said of Starfield.
