Olly Murs’ new talent show Starstruck lacks star quality, said the former champion of the iconic series it’s based on.
Ian Moor won the 1999 season of Stars In their Eyes as Chris de Burgh with Lady In Red.
The following year, he became the Champion of Champions of the show.
But Ian, 48, said Starstruck is not a patch of the original series, hosted by Matthew Kelly and running on ITV from 1990 to 2006.
Ian, now a school lab technician and no longer performing, says: “I’ve always tended to prefer the original over the remake, with only a few exceptions… and Starstruck is not. is one of them.
“Olly Murs is a logical choice for a host, but let’s face it, he’s not Matthew Kelly.”
When asked if he has any advice for the producers of Starstruck – which came out last weekend – Ian replied: “Don’t try to dig too deep into the contestants, make it more about entertaining. .
“One thing I hate about names like The the X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent is that they were too intrusive. Entertainment should draw a line and they crossed it.”
Ian, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, added: “We’ll see where it goes. It is very difficult to bring any format into great success”.
Ian, whose album Nature hit No.38 in 2000, met his fiancée Helen Verity, now 46, the following year. They plan to get married next year.
* Starstruck, ITV, 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
