On a mission to create a passwordless future for organizations and people, our startup of the week for this week is Keyless!
Keyless strives to provide seamless access to any digital service while protecting privacy and personal information. The startup develops identity management and authentication solutions built on cutting-edge, privacy-enhancing research in biometrics and cryptography. The cybersecurity startup is building a world first in the data protection sector – a privacy management platform for biometric authentication and personal identity.
Keyless was founded in early 2019 by world-renowned privacy and cybersecurity experts – Andrea Carmignani, Fabian Eberle, Dr. Giuseppe Ateniese and Dr. Paolo Gasti. The idea for Keyless came about in 2017 when Andrea was working on blockchain technology and its transformative potential for digital services.
After learning about biometric technologies at the time Apple was developing FaceID, Andrea was excited and inspired by the power blockchain and decentralized applications to create a solution that would allow people to securely store and share digital assets .
Andrea then met co-founder Fabian on a hiking trip in Italy just before starting her MBA at the renowned business school INSEAD. The two bonded over their mutual interest in disruptive technologies and planned to start a company together during their MBA year.
Along with two other co-founders, the startup set out to develop a solution that would allow users to authenticate themselves across the digital world through their own bodies, leveraging biometric technology for this solution.
To date, Keyless has raised a total of $9.5 million across 5 funding rounds. Her latest (a seed round) was announced in April 2021 and raised $3.3 million. Last year the startup also signed partnership agreements with Microsoft, Auth0 and OneLogin, co-founder Andrea commented on the news:
“Traditional multi-factor authentication (MFA) can be cumbersome, expensive to deploy and vulnerable to new attack vectors. By partnering with IAM providers such as Microsoft, Auth0 and OneLogin, we are able to serve market needs with faster and more innovative authentication solutions that are not only intuitive for users, but also provide stronger protection against emerging mobile security and privacy threats.”
