Stay safe now Summer is over – Eva Bramley, St Catherines College

Since the clocks were unveiled on October 30th, it has been getting much darker much earlier. Because of this, I think it’s important to remember that when we go somewhere in the dark, we need to stay safe and take care of ourselves. Whether it’s walking home from school or heading to your friend’s house, we all deserve to feel safe and comfortable.

Most school children leave school between 3 and 4 p.m. each day, and this would be even later if the children had other commitments such as clubs or detention. The sun is usually setting or has already set by the time some students leave school and can be pitch black by the time they get home. Even though there are street lights, do we all feel safe?

I asked 10 people and 8 of them said they never felt safe walking alone in the dark; whereas the other 2 people said they sometimes felt safe in these circumstances but mostly felt uncomfortable and insecure.

I’m interested in finding ways we can protect ourselves because a large part of the population is already aware of the problems we face. There are various techniques and ideas that can help us feel more secure when we are alone. For example, you could keep your location for close family and friends so they know where you are when you’re alone. I would also recommend getting a flashlight or using your phone’s flash so you can see more space in poorly lit areas.

While it can be irritating to have to make such changes, it’s certainly worth it if it can help each individual feel more secure when they’re out and about. Don’t forget that it’s better to be safe than sorry.
