Dancing on Ice’s Stef Reid completes the first headbanger

Stef Reid is used to making Dancing on Ice fans smile when she skates – but Holly Willoughby almost made her sick.

Team GB Paralympian, who wowed us in this series along with their pro skater Andy Buchanan, left the presenter incredibly nervous during a performance.

Skating on ice is tough enough, but Stef faces an even greater challenge after losing her right foot in a boating accident when she was just 15 years old.

That hasn’t stopped Stef from putting on sensational performances every week and bravely attempting spooky stunts on the ice rink.

During Musicals Week, Stef’s exhilarating performance on One (Reprise) from A Chorus Line left the judges in awe – but Holly admitted she was almost nauseous.

At the end of the performance, Holly confessed that she thought Stef would fall over towards the end.

“Stef, you’re getting closer to the 9 that I know you really want,” the presenter said. “Well done, you were a true leading lady out there.

“I have to say I almost threw up at the last moment backstage. What has happened there? It seemed like you almost crossed over.”

However, Stef insisted she wasn’t worried about the “mistake” because she had a lot of faith in pro partner Andy.

“Well luckily I’m pretty strong and Andy is pretty strong,” she replied.

“We now know each other well enough to actually correct a mistake, which is good. I had no worries about that.

“We really challenge ourselves with the lifts and it’s quite fun.”

Stef lost her right foot in a boating accident while spending the weekend with a friend and family at their lakeside cottage in Canada.

She came flying off an inflatable ring being towed by a boat on the lake and was almost cut in half by the propeller.

“I was underwater for what felt like a long time and when I finally reached the surface and gasped for air, I couldn’t feel any pain,” she told The Mirror in 2016.

“My first thought was, ‘That was luck. I’m not going to tell my mom that happened!’ Then I noticed the water was red all around me Everyone on the boat was freaking out and I knew something was wrong.

“Although I couldn’t see my injuries underwater, the propeller had caught me in the right leg, buttocks and lower back. I didn’t know, but he had almost cut me in half.

“What I knew was that there was way too much blood. I had no feeling in my right foot and I thought I was going to die.”

Stef faces a bigger challenge than any of her competitors as she has to work out the logistics of skating with a prosthetic leg.

“It was really hard at the beginning because I’d never skated before so I didn’t really know what I needed and the first few months were such a struggle,” she revealed on ITV’s Lorraine.

“I didn’t have confidence putting weight on my artificial side and the thing about skating is you have to be able to balance evenly.”

Stef and Andy have altered certain aspects of their routines to accommodate their prosthetic leg, such as twisting with their right ankle for the notoriously dangerous headbanger move.

The show’s bosses nearly refused the pair permission to try the dangerous stunt, but Andy convinced them to spin her head around at high speed just inches from the ice.

She told The Mirror: “He basically calls me a chicken! He said, ‘No, sorry, commit to it’. I was like, ‘You kind of got under my skin. Good for you. I like this’.

“He never holds back. He pushes me, we just tackle it.”
