Stephen Kenny gets a boost as Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is optimistic about Matt Doherty’s fitness

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has downplayed concerns over Matt Doherty’s injury, a boost for Stephen Kenny who may already be without James McClean for the June international window.

Manager Doherty was having a good time at Spurs and Saturday’s game at Aston Villa was his seventh consecutive start in the Premier League.

However, Doherty was withdrawn after 24 minutes, raising concerns about his ability to finish the season while Spurs pursue Champions League qualification, and also being fit for Ireland’s Nations League games in June. Kenny is already worried about Ireland’s summer program with McClean and Andrew Omobamidele and striker Adam Idah due to long-term injuries, although Enda Stevens has made a comeback at Sheffield United after a three-month absence.

Doherty is now an established character in Kenny’s XI and a positive update on his injury to Conte will be welcome. “I hope nothing serious because he wanted to try to keep playing but in the end he preferred to come out. I hope so because Matthew is an important player and I hope this injury isn’t serious,” Conte said.

Meanwhile, Scott Parker says Bournemouth keeper Mark Travers, who kept another clean sheet for the promotion-chaser in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield United, has made amazing progress in a year.

“Mark Travers’ development is truly remarkable,” said Parker. “If you would have seen him where he is now at the start of the season, it’s chalk and cheese. That’s entirely up to Mark.

“He has improved and deserves every bit of right to be on this team and to play on this team. He’s exactly the player who hasn’t experienced it yet. This is the first full season Mark Travers has had. I’m very happy for him.” Stephen Kenny gets a boost as Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is optimistic about Matt Doherty’s fitness
