Steven Gerrard delights Liverpool fans just minutes after recent Anfield return

The former Reds captain was back at Anfield on Saturday afternoon to play against a Barcelona Legends side in a charity game and he quickly put his stamp on the game

Steven Gerrard quickly rediscovered his bond with Liverpool fans just minutes after his recent return to Anfield.

The Aston Villa manager was back at his old place of work to play for a Reds legends team against Barcelona on Saturday, with proceeds from the game benefiting the LFC Foundation.

Gerrard appeared alongside the likes of Jamie Carragher, Dirk Kuyt, Glen Johnson and Luis Garcia in the Reds’ squad against a star-studded Barca side captained by Rivaldo and it was a success Liverpool Skipper, who forced the opening goal after just 14 minutes of play.

After a striking drive into the penalty area, although moving a little slower than usual, Gerrard was turned upside down and the referee pointed to the spot.

The club’s former captain scrambled to his feet and awarded the penalty with minimal fuss, firing confidently home and blowing a kiss to the home fans.

Speaking as filmed at the club’s AXA training center on Friday as he cheered himself up for the gamesaid Gerrard: “Hello Reds, great to be back at the new AXA training ground preparing for tomorrow’s game.

“I heard it’s a full house which has been so good for everyone who comes to support us for all the good causes.”

Sami Hyypia and Steve McManaman are among the other famous Reds names in the squad, which is managed by Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Juliano Belletti, Edmilson, Gaizka Mendieta, Ludovic Guily and Javier Saviola are among the players available for the Catalan giants, with Garcia playing for both sides.

Gerrard returned to Anfield for the first time since heading to Merseyside with his Aston Villa side First League December clash that ended 1-0 for the Reds thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty in the second half.

On that occasion too, the former skipper received a huge ovation from the home fans but Gerrard insisted he could drown out the emotions and focus on the task at hand, simply saying: “For me, the priority for me is the support of the Aston Villa- fans.”

The Reds’ second leg with Villa at Villa Park was scheduled for the weekend of April 16 but has to be postponed after the Reds achieve that FA Cup semifinals
