STEVEN GERRARD has revealed why he will NEVER manage one of his bitter rivals.
The Liverpool legend admitted he was “shocked” by Rafa Benitez’s controversial decision to accept the job as manager of Everton, who was once revered as a Kop idol.
Benitez’s appointment appeared to have been abandoned from the start after disgusted Toffees fans made it clear they didn’t want the former Anfield boss in charge of their club.
And Gerrard, who faced a hostile reception upon his return to Goodison Park as Aston Villa manager on Saturday, admitted it was one of the rare occasions he agreed with the Austrian team. Merseyside green.
“Work can go right or wrong for whatever reason, it’s none of my business,” he said.
“But the biggest shock and surprise for me was that Rafa took the job in the first place.
“I would never have thought of managing a competitor with whom I have competed for more than two decades. That does not make sense.
“The opponent has a reason and in my opinion, everyone is entitled to make their own decisions. “But for me, it doesn’t go into my head.”

Gerrard played under Benitez for six years at Anfield, famously winning the 2005 Champions League together after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over AC Milan.
However, Everton sack unpopular Spaniard after less than seven months in charge and Duncan Ferguson will take care of them when they host Villa.
Gerrard is still scratching his head as to why such an experienced and respected coach would step into a lion’s nest at a club where most fans back home don’t want him.
He added: “Needless to say he’s on the list of top, world-class managers, I think he’s proven it throughout his career.
“The legacy he has and his connection to Liverpool and what he imparted at Liverpool – to take the job at Everton – I didn’t expect it.
“What happened at Everton, it can happen at any club if the fit doesn’t work or some thing behind the scenes doesn’t work for you.
“It’s not fate to fail, it shouldn’t have entered your head in the first place.”
